Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Release Date & Timeline
Production History (2021–2027)
The Two-Part Split Announced
Producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller reveal that the sequel narrative is too expansive for a single feature, splitting the story into Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) and Part Two.
Retitled 'Beyond the Spider-Verse'
Sony officially names the third installment Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and slates it for a March 29, 2024 theatrical debut.
'Across' Release & Strike Impact
Across the Spider-Verse premieres to global acclaim ($690M box office). WGA and SAG-AFTRA labor strikes begin, halting all voice acting and script finalization. Sony removes the film from the March 2024 calendar.
Directing Leadership Finalized
Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are confirmed as the primary directing team to steward the massive multi-style animation pipeline at Sony Pictures Imageworks.
CinemaCon Calibration to June 18, 2027
Sony locks in June 18, 2027 for a summer blockbuster launch, confirming IMAX 1.43:1 formatting and complete dialogue recording across Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jharrel Jerome.
The 3 Real Reasons for the Delay
1. Screenplay Restructuring
Christopher Miller explained in 2026: "The movie was originally one film split in half. But once you looked at that second half, you realized it lacked a self-contained story arc with its own beginning, middle, and end. Dismantling it to rebuild a complete movie took time."
2. Animator Working Conditions
Following investigative reports regarding intense crunch on Across, Sony Pictures Animation revamped production schedules to ensure animators could craft complex visual styles (halftone, watercolor, Syd Mead cyberpunk, and noir) without unsustainable overtime.
3. Native IMAX 1.43:1 Formatting
Beyond the Spider-Verse is the first animated film in Sony history natively framed and rendered for 1.43:1 expanded IMAX ratio. Cinematographer Alice Brooks was brought on to oversee camera geometry and lighting resolution.
